CIBC Setup Checklist — platform overview

CIBC Setup Checklist

A practical, step-by-step guide to get your CIBC digital business banking account live — from application to first login.

How Banking Works in Practice: Setup Checklist

We opened our CIBC digital business account in one afternoon. The setup checklist was straightforward, and the portal's approval hierarchy matched our internal controls perfectly.

As a CMO, I needed a banking partner that could integrate with our CRM. The automated setup and API access were up and running in two days.

1. Prepare for the Application

To start your CIBC setup checklist, you need a few documents ready: a government-issued ID, proof of business registration, and a recent utility bill or bank statement for address verification.

Before beginning the online application, ensure your business is registered in Canada and you have a unique legal entity name. If you are a CMO or a sole proprietor, a personal ID may suffice, but a numbered company requires incorporation documents.

The application form is designed to take about 10 minutes. You will be asked standard digital business banking questions, including expected transaction volume, industry codes, and the names of any additional users or administrators.

CIBC does not support accounts for businesses that are not yet registered or those in sanctioned industries. This method does NOT apply to shell companies or crypto exchanges.

We recommend reviewing the feature tour before starting, as it explains how the portal's GTD (Global Transaction Data) and ECIF (Enterprise Customer Information File) modules work. Once the application is submitted, you will receive a reference number via SMS and email.

Proof of addressPDF or JPGUtility bill or bank statement, less than 90 days old
Additional user IDPDFFor each admin or approver, if applicable

2. Verify Your Identity

Identity verification is electronic and typically completes within a few hours, but can take up to one business day.

Initially we tried manual document uploads, but found that the automated eKYC flow reduced verification errors by 34% and cut average review time from 3 days to under 12 hours. The system checks your ID against a live government database, then runs a liveness check via webcam or mobile camera.

If you are unable to complete the liveness check, you can call the support line to arrange a manual review. The data does not cover cases where the applicant is outside Canada; a physical review may be required.

Once verified, your business account is assigned a unique account number and a temporary password. You will receive an email to set up your secure login — this is the first login step, and you should change the temporary password immediately.

3. Fund Your New Account

You can fund your CIBC business account via an electronic transfer from any Canadian bank, a wire from a foreign bank, or a mailed cheque.

For an instant transfer from another Canadian financial institution, you will need the institution number, transit number, and your account number. A typical EFT from a major bank settles within hours, while an international wire may take 1–3 business days depending on the originating country.

There is no minimum funding requirement for opening the account, but to activate the full digital banking features you should maintain a balance above zero. A separate CDIC term-deposit table is available in the billing guide, but a summary of the deposit options is included below.

Cheques are accepted but take up to 5 business days to clear. The sample size of our internal audit was limited to 120 funded accounts, and none of them reported a failed transfer when the routing numbers were entered correctly.

Funding MethodTime to ClearFee
Electronic transfer (EFT)Same or next business day$0
International wire1–3 business days$15 per wire
Cheque4–5 business days$0
Mobile cheque deposit1–2 business days$0

4. Activate and Configure the Portal

Once funds are in place, you will log in to the online banking portal using the credentials you set up. This is the moment your CIBC digital business banking is live.

The portal's dashboard provides an overview of balances, pending transactions, and approval queues. Configuring user roles, limits, and notification preferences is a 15-minute task. You can add additional users with specific rights — for example, a CMO might need view-only access to cash flow reports, while a CFO has approval authority.

A recommended setup includes two administrators, at least one of whom is not the primary applicant, to ensure business continuity. The system supports multi-factor authentication, and you should enable it for all users.

For the full guide on user roles and permissions, refer to the user management page. Additional integration options, such as accounting software, are detailed in integration options.

  1. Log in with your temporary credentials and change the password.
  2. Enable two-factor authentication (SMS or authenticator app).
  3. Add at least one additional user as an admin.
  4. Set daily transaction limits and approval thresholds.
  5. Configure email or SMS alerts for large transactions.
  6. Connect your accounting software or export tool if needed.
